Did you remember my old post about excluding categories in WordPress recent posts widget? It is still one of the easiest methods to exclude categories in wordpress recent posts widget. But it needed some coding knowledge. Well.. I’ve developed a plugin for that purpose called Custom Recent Posts Widget. When activated, this plugin creates a widget for showing recent posts from certain categories in widgetized areas. (aka sidebars).
Download this plugin from official WordPress plugin repository.
Upadte: I’ve updated this plugin to show recent posts by tags as well. This option is available in version 2.0

Hi Prassana – I just wanted to say that I have used this widget a few times now on various sites and its lean and clean output is really very, very helpful! It is also very easy to use for techie and non-techie WP site owners as well. Thanks for an awesome plugin

Great plugin Prasanna! This does exactly what I was looking for.
If you’re ever going to revise this, I’d like to recommend an additional function if possible
maybe the ability to choose a list-style (none, disc, square, inside…)
I use additional css just to add discs as seen here idreamofphilippines.com

How can I add spacing between the titles? And also how can I add them as bullets?
They are hard to read so close together, at least in my theme.
