How to redirect WordPress Feed to Feedburner

There are plenty of WordPress plugins available to redirect your WordPress feed to Feedburner. But they are all just unnecessary plugins. You can redirect your WordPress feed to feedburner by adding just 4 lines of code to your .htaccess file. If it is that simple, why add another plugin load to your WordPress? ๐Ÿ™‚ In this post I’ll show you how to redirect wordpress feed to feedburner.

Note that .htaccess has the potential to bring your site down. Even a small typo may end up in 500 Internal Server Error. So, before editing your .htaccess, take a backup of the current file and keep it handy. In case anything goes wrong, you can restore the original .htaccess file.

Okay, open up .htaccess in your site’s root directory and navigate to # BEGIN WordPress.

Now add this code just below the RewriteBase /.

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}      ^/?(feed.*|rss.*)        [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^.*(FeedBurner|FeedValidator) [NC]
RewriteRule ^feed/?.*$   http://feeds.feedburner.com/prasanna-sp  [L,NC,R=302]
RewriteRule ^rss/?.*$  http://feeds.feedburner.com/prasanna-sp [L,NC,R=302]

Finally, it should look like this,

# BEGIN WordPress
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI}  ^/?(feed.*|rss.*)        [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^.*(FeedBurner|FeedValidator) [NC]
RewriteRule ^feed/?.*$  http://feeds.feedburner.com/prasanna-sp  [L,NC,R=302]
RewriteRule ^rss/?.*$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/prasanna-sp [L,NC,R=302]

RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
</IfModule>
# END WordPress

This redirects both /feed and /rss requests to your feedburner URL. Obviously, you need to change http://feeds.feedburner.com/prasanna-sp to point your own feed address. Otherwise you’ll be redirecting your feed to my address!

It is a very simple solution to redirect WordPress feed to feedburner. If you are still looking for a plugin to achieve this, I’d recommend FD Feedburner Plugin

If you have no idea what FeedBurner is, you need to visit feedburner.com, seriously!!

    Hi, thanks for this.

    I need to make some changes to a Category feed in WordPress and I’m wondering if this could help…

    I am currently “feeding” an iTunes podcast from one of my WP category feeds. (www.mydomain.com/category/feed/)

    I want to now “feed” my iTunes podcast from a FeedBurner feed. (I already have the FeedBurner feed set up to pull content from the correct place — which is another server, not my category feed.)

    Here are Apple’s instructions for changing your podcast feed URL: http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html#changing.

    Basically, when Apple comes to check my WP category feed, I need something to tell it, “Go to the FeedBurner feed.”

    Could I use a modification of your .htaccess instructions to do as Apple instructs?

    Let me know if you have any advice. Thank you!
